SENIOR MEDICAL DIRECTOR  RHEUMATOLOGY

We are seeking an accomplished Senior Medical Director – Rheumatology to provide medical leadership, strategic guidance, and support for clinical trials. This client-dedicated role involves overseeing a Phase III clinical trial (for a promising new indication) for a pioneering biotech partner of our CRO client.

With a worldwide presence, the company collaborates with top biotechnology and pharmaceutical R&D organizations to help bring transformative therapies to market.

This role can be based remotely from most EU locations, including the UK and Switzerland. It is a full-time position with standard working hours and a permanent employment contract in the country of residence. Occasional travel to the company's headquarters in Europe will be required.

Responsibilities

 

• Take the lead on the clinical strategy for a specific indication - turning the strategic product blueprint into a robust, actionable Clinical Development Plan that balances scientific rigour with timelines and resources.

• Manage and mentor Clinical Trial Physicians working on the program, ensuring high-quality medical input across studies while supporting team growth.

​

• Oversee the medical aspects of all clinical trials within the indication in real time - keeping communication clear, aligned, and consistent across study teams and senior management.

​

• Ensure consistency across programs when it comes to messaging, safety evaluation, and regulatory responses — working closely with cross-functional leaders to streamline external communication (e.g., with IRBs and health authorities).

​

• Provide expert medical oversight and leadership for the rheumatology studies, ensuring adherence to study protocols, relevant SOPs, and regulatory requirements.​​​​

​

• Play a key role in shaping a high-performing team of development physicians and fostering a culture of collaboration, scientific curiosity, and accountability.

​

• Maintain oversight of compliance and regulatory integrity across all trials under your remit.​​

​

• Act as the chief medical liaison between the sponsor and internal departments, addressing concerns and resolving issues.​​​​

​

• Ensure all research activities comply with relevant SOPs, regulatory guidelines, and industry standards, including Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Institutional Review Board (IRB) regulations.

​

• Deliver therapeutic area and protocol-specific training to monitors and study teams.

​

• Conduct data analysis and reporting, interpreting clinical trial data and preparing detailed reports on project feasibility, strategic insights, safety, and risk management. Present findings and recommendations to stakeholders.

 

Requirements

​

• MD or equivalent degree with (ideally) board certification in Rheumatology and experience working in the field.

• Experience working within the pharmaceutical industry - 5 years plus. 

• Experience with clinical trials as an Principal Investigator or other relevant experience in the pharmaceutical industry in clinical development or PhV.

• Excellent leadership and team collaboration skills.

• Comprehensive understanding of regulatory requirements and GCP guidelines.

• Outstanding analytical, problem-solving, and communication abilities.

• Full professional proficiency in English.
